Book Nook: John Kasich and Lyanda Lynn Haupt

"Two Paths - America Divided or United" by John Kasich

Last year our Ohio Governor John Kasich mounted an unsuccessful campaign to try to secure the nomination to become his party's candidate in our 2016 presidential election. The political neophyte and outsider candidate Donald Trump steamrolled his opposition and went on to win the race for the presidency. Throughout the GOP primaries John Kasich distinguished himself as a voice of reason during candidate debates.

Governor Kasich is currently serving his final term in office. He has stated that he has no plans to run for elective office again but he has not ruled out another run for the presidency. In his new book he shares his thoughts on how we can counter some of the polarization that has seemingly paralyzed political discourse in this country.

The last time we had John on the show he was still Congressman Kasich. That was almost 20 years ago. It was an honor to speak to him again.

"Mozart's Starling" by Lyanda Lynn Haupt

My second interview on this program was with Lyanda Lynn Haupt. We discussed her fascinating new book about starlings. Did you know that the composer Mozart once had a pet starling? Did you know that starlings are considered to be a non-native nuisance in this country? Have you ever listened to a starling singing away in full throated rapture? Lyanda Lynn Haupt wanted to feel what Mozart might have felt when he had that little bird so she went out and obtained a starling nestling. She named her little friend "Carmen." This is a lovely story and a wonderful book.
