We live in a society that is awash in communications, much of it misdirected. We are engulfed: emails, texts, advertising, billboards, and every other variety of communication in a visual and audio assault that is endless. In this sea of blather how do we get our messages through to the intended recipients? Well, that's definitely a question that millions of people are pondering every day.
Marrianne McMullen has spent decades honing the craft of clear communication. In her book "Persuasive: 40 Lessons in Communicating for the Common Good" she shares wisdom she has gained from her experiences as well as some valuable secrets that could help you to become a more effective communicator.
I learned a lot from this book. It gave me a sense of validation that some of the things I have been doing when I try to communicate are worthwhile. Every day I work on crafting radio programs and print pieces, communications with an audience that I have spent the last 30 years developing. And when I get emails from readers and listeners who are responding to these messages I'm sending out into the ether I feel like I am accomplishing something. Something good, I hope?
Can we ever know enough about communicating?
