The deadline is approaching for tornado-affected low-income families who rely on SNAP benefits to apply for additional emergency food assistance related to the recent tornado disaster. The deadline is Thursday, June 6.
Low-income families who lost food as a result of power outages lasting four hours or longer in the aftermath of the Memorial Day tornadoes that swept through the Miami Valley are eligible to file for the emergency replacement aid.
Approved applicants would see benefits added to their existing Ohio Direction cards. Amounts cannot exceed their total monthly allocation.
Officials report several thousand applicants have already filed to receive the additional SNAP benefits.
“Over the last few days, we’ve seen the true Ohio spirit emerging as neighbors help neighbors, families come together, and even strangers reach out to offer support,” said Gov. DeWine in a statement. “Hopefully, this additional assistance will help provide reassurance to struggling families.”
Any SNAP-recipient families in need of emergency replacement benefits are urged to contact their county Job and Family Services agency office.
More than 100 people remain in emergency Red Cross shelters.
Red Cross officials report the organization is opening a new resource center to help residents connect with the services they need to recover from the disaster over the long term. The center is expected to open Thursday, June 6, at 1000 N. Keowee Street, from 1 p.m. - 8 p.m.
