AP Source Says Ohio gov Wants Drilling Tax Hike
Ohio Gov. John Kasich is preparing to detail second-year priorities Wednesday that include a proposed tax hike on oil and gas extraction paired with eventual income-tax relief.
A source close to the administration with knowledge of the plan told The Associated Press the Republican governor will also propose a plan aimed at better aligning college and vocational courses and state workforce development programs to meet job opportunities. The source requested anonymity because the information had not yet been made public.
Kasich also has planned a "very austere" state construction budget containing no new community projects, and cuts to agency programs his Cabinet directors identified was wasteful or redundant.
Some proposals face a potentially uphill battle in the Republican-led state Legislature, where most members face voters this fall.
