Today's winter storm is making some travel treacherous, and with gusty winds in the forecast Wednesday, there's a potential for power outages across the Miami Valley. Tom Foder with the Dayton chapter of the American Red Cross says when that happens, it's important to take safety precautions. Foder warns that using generators or other heating sources can be dangerous if not used correctly.
"Make sure generators are properly vented, follow the manufacturer's recommendations, and don't bring in external heating sources such as charcoal or lamps that are made for patios. That will just cause a whole host of problems," says Foder.
Foder adds that candles pose a fire hazard, and flashlights are a much safer alternative. He says it's important for families to have emergency kits that include things like bottled water, first aid supplies and batteries so that people can be safe in their homes. As of this afternoon, Foder says no shelters have been designated due to the weather.
"This storm particularly may not lend itself to mass shelters because the traveling conditions are so difficult. If people are in their homes without power, the red cross may be more likely to set up feeding stations, but the travel conditions are so bad," says Foder.
