Tuesday's primary results set up high stakes for fall races for U.S. Senate and a newly drawn U.S. House
district along the Lake Erie shoreline.

Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel claimed the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate, as expected. He'll now face Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown in a contest that promises to be intense and expensive.  Mandel has already raised $4 million toward the fight, and Brown has a similar amount.

Mandel took 49 percent of the vote statewide in a race against five other GOP contenders.

Ohio's voter turnout for Super Tuesday is well short of the record rate logged for the primary election four
years ago, when there were hot contests for both Republicans and Democrats in the presidential race.

Results posted by the Secretary of State's office show the turnout was just over 25 percent Tuesday. Ohio voters narrowly favored Mitt Romney over Rick Santorum as the Republicans battle for the chance to challenge President Barack Obama in November.

More than 1.9 million of Ohio's 7.7 million voters cast a ballot.

Competitive congressional primaries are being decided around Ohio as a result of a revamped congressional map. Democratic voters must choose between longtime U.S. Reps. Marcy Kaptur of Toledo and Dennis Kucinich of Cleveland in a newly drawn district that stretches across the Lake Erie shoreline. A four-way Democratic contest is also under way for a new Columbus district. Former congresswoman Mary Jo Kilroy faces Ted Celeste, brother of former Gov. Dick Celeste; former state lawmaker Joyce Beatty; and Columbus city councilwoman Priscilla Tyson. In southwest Ohio, Republican U.S. Rep.

When it comes to the controversial gas drilling technique known as hydraulic fracturing, the Republican Party itself appears fractured — especially in the critical swing state of Ohio. Super Tuesday voters are choosing among a field of GOP contenders who all support less regulation of the drilling technique. Yet some Republicans in Ohio are calling for greater oversight and new taxes on companies using it to harvest natural gas.
