Proposed State Budget Provision Could Hurt Cities Operating Red Light Cameras

Communities that still have red light cameras in operation right now are questioning part of the budget plan proposed by the Ohio House. There’s disagreement over a part of the bill designed to take away revenue that’s generated through those cameras.

Some cities are continuing to operate red light cameras while they sue over a new state law that restricts the usage of those devices. State Rep. Ron Maag says there’s a part of the newly proposed House budget that deals with those communities.

“They say it’s all about safety. It’s all about safety," Maag said. "Well, for every dollar that they would collect, we would just reduce their local government fund by that amount because they are not raising revenue.”

But Kent Scarett with the Ohio Municipal League says local communities are not happy with that.

“It seems to punish municipalities that want to comply with the new state law,” he said.

Under that new law, communities can only use red light cameras if they have an officer on site who can issue those tickets at the time drivers disobey traffic signals.
