Wittenberg University recently broke ground on a new health, wellness and athletics complex. The nearly $40 million project was made possible by private donations, which included a $10 million gift from alumni Wes and Ann Bates, of the family that founded the Stanley Steemer company.

Wittenberg plans to build a new 125,000-square-foot indoor track and multipurpose field. The facility will include new classrooms and space for community events.

The university also plans to take advantage of $8.9 million in historic tax credits to renovate a gymnasium built in 1929.

Athletic Director Gary Williams says the project shows the university’s commitment to student development.

“The previous class was our first class over 600 in decades and right now we’re seeing a record number of applications. Momentum is building. So the goal of this project is to make sure that every student has a reason to come to this building,” he says.

The university is hoping to be awarded additional tax credits and has about $5 million left to raise for the project. They expect the building to be completed in about two years.
