For the second time this month, activists planned to rally against the Trump administration's immigrant family separation policy in downtown Dayton.
The event is one of more than 600 “Families Belong Together” immigration rallies set to be held nationwide Saturday.
Activist group Dayton Indivisible for All first protested the Trump administration’s policy of separating immigrant families along the U.S. border on June 14. The rally in front of Representative Mike Turner’s office drew nearly 100 people.
Joy Schwab, with event co-sponsor the Dayton Women’s Rights Alliance, says organizers are expecting up to 2,000 attendees this Saturday.
Although President Trump issued an executive order allowing families to be held together in detention on June 20, many separated families have not yet be reunited. Schwab said that’s one of the reasons why organizers decided to hold a second event.
“Children are still being held,” said Schwab. “Until they are reunited we want to keep the pressure on.”
The rally is set to include speakers from Advocates for Basic Legal Equality and the League of United Latin American Citizens. It’s scheduled for this Saturday, June 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Dayton’s Courthouse Square.
