House Budget Says No To Medicaid, Yes to Income Tax Cut

In this week's PoliticsOhio, Emily McCord speaks to Statehouse Bureau reporters Bill Cohen and Jo Ingles to discuss the Ohio House version of the budget, which includes a 7% income tax cut for Ohioans, a rejection of Governor Kasich's proposal to extend Medicaid coverage and the tax on oil and gas drillers. Jo Ingles reports the house also got rid of a plan to ban educator's for talking about "gateway sex", but that it's a conversation that's likely to come up again.

Last week, Governor Kasich unveiled his new school funding formula with a lot of fanfare but few details on what it would actually mean for districts. Gov. John Kasich will unveil his second budget today, and it’s expected to include changes in the state income tax and an increase in the severance tax on oil and natural gas drillers. Budget director Tim Keen wouldn’t give any hints in a recent interview, other than to say that the governor is focused on economic competitiveness and job growth.

Springfield's Superintendent of Schools, Dr. David Estrop ,says he is pleased with Governor John Kasich's education budget and reform proposal. Estrop feels the plan will benefit the school system.

Kasich's two-year budget plan calls for the state to pay for low income students who want to attend any K through 12 school including charter and private religious schools.
